When You Need a Helper for Heavy Items (And When You Don't)
I once tried to carry a washing machine to the 3rd floor by myself. Spoiler: It ended in the hospital. Here's what I learned.
Table of Contents
The story you shouldn't repeat
I thought I was strong enough. The washing machine was "only" 60kg. I had watched YouTube videos. I had a hand truck. What could go wrong?
Everything. Everything could go wrong.
On the 2nd floor, the thing slipped. I tried to catch it. Result: Bruised arm, sprained wrist, and a washing machine with a dent.
Since then I know: There are things you don't do alone.
The weight limit: When does it get dangerous?
Doable alone (with caution)
- Up to 15kg: Boxes, chairs, small shelves
- 15-25kg: Still okay, but only short distances
- 25-35kg: Only if you're trained AND have good technique
Need two people
- 35-50kg: Coffee tables, small sofas, dressers
- 50-80kg: Large sofas, refrigerators, washing machines
- Over 80kg: Pianos, American-style fridges, solid wood wardrobes
Non-negotiable: ALWAYS two people
No matter how strong you are:
- Washing machines: Not just heavy, but also bulky and awkward
- Sofas: Weight is okay, but you can't get them around corners alone
- Refrigerators: Must be transported upright, impossible alone
- Stairs + weight: Every step with 40kg+ is an accident risk
The stair multiplier
Most people underestimate how much stairs change everything.
Rule of thumb:
- Ground floor = base effort
- Each floor = +50% effort
- No elevator on 4th floor = 3x as exhausting as ground floor
Concretely: A 50kg wardrobe on ground floor? Doable with two people. A 50kg wardrobe on 4th floor without elevator? You need breaks, good technique, and possibly a third helper for doors.
When a helper is ALWAYS worth it
1. When you live alone
You have nobody on site? Then a paid helper is gold.
- You don't have to ask anyone for favors
- The helper knows the technique (how to carry without destroying your back)
- It's faster
Cost: At BringEasy, an additional helper costs about 30€/hour. For 50€ you're done in most cases.
2. When stairs are involved
From 3rd floor without elevator, I would ALWAYS book a helper, even if the item "only" weighs 30kg.
Why?
- Stairwell corners are tricky
- You need someone stabilizing from below
- Alone on stairs = accident risk
3. Bulky items (even if light)
A 3-seater sofa might "only" weigh 40kg. But you'll NEVER get it through a Berlin Altbau stairwell alone.
Bulky items that need helpers:
- L-shaped sofas
- Double bed frames
- Large wardrobes (PAX, BILLY XXL, etc.)
- Mattresses (surprisingly annoying alone)
When you DON'T need a helper
Small to medium items
- IKEA KALLAX shelves (you can carry these yourself)
- Desks (usually can be disassembled)
- Chairs (no problem individually)
- Boxes (pack max 20kg per box!)
Delivery without carrying
If the driver only needs to drive (e.g., ground floor to ground floor), you don't need an extra helper. You can help load/unload yourself.
The "Friends vs. Helper" comparison
Asking friends for help
Pro:
- Costs "nothing" (lol, pizza + beer also costs 30€)
- Time together
Contra:
- You owe them something
- They might come late or not at all
- No experience = higher injury risk
- You feel bad making them sweat
Booking a paid helper
Pro:
- Punctual and reliable
- Know how to carry (professional technique)
- You don't owe anyone anything
- Insured for accidents
Contra:
- Costs 30-50€
My take: For 1-2 heavy items, 30€ for a helper is better invested than straining a friendship.
Physical reality: What most people underestimate
Back pain after heavy lifting
Statistic: 80% of Germans have back problems at least once in their life. Heavy lifting is one of the main reasons.
Correct lifting technique:
- Bend legs, not back
- Keep load close to body
- Never lift with hollow back
- Don't twist while carrying
Even with perfect technique: Above 35kg the risk is real.
If you're not trained
Be honest with yourself:
- How often do you lift heavy things?
- Do you have back problems?
- How fit are you really?
It's NOT weakness to get help. It's smart.
TL;DR - Your decision guide
Doable alone:
- Up to 25kg
- No stairs (or has elevator)
- Compact shape
Need helper:
- Over 35kg
- 3+ floors without elevator
- Bulky shape (sofa, wardrobe, mattress)
- Washing machines, refrigerators, pianos - ALWAYS
Pro tip: If you're unsure, get a helper. 30€ is nothing compared to a broken back or damaged furniture.
