4 ways students without a car can furnish a WG in one weekend
You're moving in on the 1st, today is the 29th, and your room is empty. Been there. Here's your survival guide.
Table of Contents
Reality: You have no car, no money, and an empty WG room
We all know this situation:
You finally found a WG room in Berlin (congrats, that's the hardest part). You're moving in 2 days. Your "inventory" consists of 2 suitcases and a mattress.
You need:
- Bed/mattress
- Desk + chair
- Shelf
- Maybe small dresser
- Lamp
Your budget: 200-300€ max.
Way 1: The "Zu Verschenken" goldmine
What: Kleinanzeigen category "Zu Verschenken" (free stuff)
Why this works: People in Berlin move CONSTANTLY. Many just want to get rid of stuff and list it for free.
My system:
- Filter by postal code: Search only in your neighborhood (10-15km max)
- Notifications on: Set up search agent for "Zu verschenken desk" / "Zu verschenken shelf" etc.
- Be fast: Good stuff is gone in 1-2h. If you see something, write immediately: "I can pick up today, when works for you?"
Real talk:
- 70% of people don't respond or already gave it away
- 20% are too far or the item is trash
- 10% are gold
But that 10% is worth it. Last month I got an IKEA desk for 0€ in Neukölln that was practically new.
Transport problem: You don't have a car. For smaller stuff (lamp, pillows, kitchen stuff): BVG works. For big stuff: See way 3.
Way 2: IKEA "As-Is" section
What: The hidden area at the back of IKEA with reduced goods
Why this works:
- Returns, display items, slightly damaged goods
- Often 50-70% reduced
- It's a bit scratched. Who cares.
My tip: DON'T go Saturday. Go Monday or Tuesday morning. That's when new stock from weekend returns comes.
What I found there:
- LACK side table: Instead of 10€ for 4€
- BILLY shelf (bit scratched): Instead of 60€ for 25€
- MARKUS office chair (display item): Instead of 170€ for 80€
Transport: IKEA delivers for 29€ within Berlin. If you buy 2-3 large items: Worth it.
OR: Rent an IKEA van for 2h (30€ + deposit). But then you need license + helpers.
Way 3: Kleinanzeigen + flexible delivery
What: Normal Kleinanzeigen purchases, but with smart transport
The system:
Phase 1: Collect everything in one day
Saturday morning, 9 AM, you start.
- Have 5-6 items pre-planned: Contact sellers the week before, arrange pickup times
- Route planning: Try to cluster everything in roughly same direction (all in South Berlin OR all in North Berlin)
- Budget: Set max prices: Desk max 40€, shelf max 25€, etc.
Phase 2: Transport
Option A - The friend convoy: If you have friends with cars: Pizza + beer = they'll help you. This is the traditional WG-furnishing method.
Option B - Use service: For large items (bed, desk, shelf): Use delivery service.
Example calculation:
- 3 large items from different locations in Neukölln to Friedrichshain
- Cost: about 70-90€ total
- Alternative: Rent van for half day = 60€ + fuel + you drive + need helpers
Option C - Mix: Small stuff (lamp, chair, pillows) you get yourself via BVG. Large stuff get delivered.
Way 4: WG-successor trick (the easiest!)
What: Take over furniture from previous tenant
Why this works: Many WG residents want to just leave their stuff because they don't want to deal with transport or are going abroad.
How to do it:
- Ask directly at viewing appointment: "Are you leaving anything here that I could take over?"
- Be realistic: Taking over bed is weird (hygiene), but desk, shelf, chair? Totally fine.
- Negotiate fair price: "I'd give you 50€ for desk + shelf, then you don't have to dispose of it"
Last year I got a complete IKEA desk + chair + small shelf for 80€ this way. The guy was happy he didn't have to carry anything.
Bonus tip: The emergency first-night plan
You're moving in tomorrow, haven't organized anything?
Minimum Viable Room:
- Mattress: IKEA MALFORS for 69€ (delivered rolled, fits in taxi)
- Lamp: 10€ from Späti or IKEA
- Phone charger: You already have one
- Beer crate as nightstand: Works surprisingly well
Everything else you can organize next week. Trust me, one week on a mattress with beer-crate nightstand isn't ideal, but totally doable.
What I learned after 4 WG moves
Don't:
- ❌ Want everything perfect on first day (just stresses)
- ❌ Buy expensive new furniture for WG room (you'll move again in 1-2 years anyway)
- ❌ Travel too far for "the perfect item" (time is money)
Do:
- ✓ Set priorities: Bed > desk > rest
- ✓ Activate "Zu Verschenken" notifications 2 weeks BEFORE you move in
- ✓ Accept that 80% of people on Kleinanzeigen are flaky (priced in)
- ✓ Use delivery for large items (saves SO much stress)
TL;DR - Your weekend action plan
Friday:
- Make list: What do you really need?
- Search Kleinanzeigen, contact 10-15 items
Saturday:
- Morning: Do all confirmed pickups
- Small stuff: Get yourself via BVG
- Large stuff: Organize delivery (BringEasy for single items, or van if you have lots)
Sunday:
- Assemble
- Drink beer
- Done
Budget: 200-300€ is totally realistic for basic furnishing if you shop smart.
